Charles James Hatt, son of Frank Hatt and Elizabeth Fox was born in Eastnor Township on October 28, 1903. His early childhood days were spent at Barrow Bay. When he was 7 years old, the family moved to Lot 15, 15th Sideroad on Concession 3, where his father cleared the land out of green swamp. Charlie attended Public School at Barrow Bay and then worked on the farm at home. In the winter when his Dad & Mom worked in a logging camp, his grandmother [ Elizabeth Emma Mary Grant - wife of Richard Hatt ] would keep house and cook for Charlie. He always said that she was an excellent cook.
On September 4th, 1929, Charlie married Gertrude Jane McCutcheon. For the first 3 years of marriage, they worked on a Tug & Dredge for the Canadian Dredging Company on the Welland Canal and in Toronto & Kingston.
In 1933, they returned to the Bruce and bought the Family Farm, which they farmed for 36 years. During that time Charlie was a councillor for Eastnor Township and a member of the Trustee Board for SS # 4. He was also a Superintendent of Centreville United Church Sunday School for several years. Charlie was an Church Elder at this Church and later at Central United Church in Lion's Head.
In 1969, Charlie and Gertrude sold the farm and moved into Lion's Head. For seven years, Charlie was the Caretaker of Eastnor Cemetary and following this , he worked for Harvey Warder Construction.
In retirement, Charlie has kept busy gardening and visiting friends at the Nursing Home. Both Charlie and Gertie have been active in the Church and at the Senior Citizen Friendship Club.
On October 27th, 1986, the Community held a Charlie Hatt night in honour of his dedication to Community Service. In attendance, were 115 friends and relatives. The event was held at the Senior Citizens Centre in Lion;s Head
