Individual Note: Sample 1901 Cumberland census records about the Merriam family available from Ancestry.ca:
A Merriam family household of at least 10 members residing in the district of Cumberland was recorded in 1901. The head of household, Randolf Merriam, was born in Nova Scotia in 1852. He identified his heritage as English. By 1901, at the age of 48, he had an occupation that was recorded as "Mariner". Randolf's wife was Caroline Merriam, who was 42 years old. Caroline was born in Nova Scotia in 1858. She also identified her heritage as English. Randolf and Caroline had 8 children, 3 boys and 5 girls. In 1878 their eldest child, a boy named Harvie, was born. Four years later, in 1882, when Randolf was 30 years old and Caroline was 24 years old their second son, who was named Loyd, was born. Then, in 1884, with their two older sons ages 6 years and 2 years, their third child, Cassie, was born. In 1901 another daughter, their fourth child and second girl, Minnie, was born. With four other children in the household, their fifth child and third girl, Salome, was born in 1891. She was followed by 3 more children: their daughter Garney, born in 1893; their daughter Gwendoline, born in 1897; and their son Ratchford, born in 1899. Thus, at the time of the 1901 census, this Merriam family household was filled with 8 children whose ages were 2, 3, 7, 10, 12, 16, 18, and 23 years.
